Precipitation
Precipitation types depend on the temperature in air. Precipitation can change forms as it falls; melting or freezing!
Common PrecipitationNotice in the image to the right that the air temperature plays a significant role in determining types of precipitation. Snow can only occur when the air from the clouds all the way to the ground is at or below freezing. Warm air interaction with the precipitation can lead to sleet, freezing rain, and rain. |
Hail Formation
Hail forms when water droplets are lifted above the freezing line in large cumulonimbus clouds. The frozen droplets are circulated through the cloud, collecting more ice on their surface...finally falling to Earth once they are too heavy to be supported by the storm's updrafts. Hail forms in strong thunderstorms during the summer months. Even though the precipitation is frozen, it happens during warm seasons. |
Dangers of Precipitation
Rain can cause roadways to become slick or flooded. Flooding is the leading cause of weather related death throughout the world.
Sleet, Ice, and Freezing Rain can make road conditions hazardous and can cause power outages as well. Freezing rain is especially notorious for power outages, as it builds up quickly on tree branches, power lines, and other surfaces. Hail, if it is large enough, can damage property and even cause personal injury. |
