Unit 1: Earth’s Atmosphere
Review: Atoms, Matter, and Other Stuff
EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE IS MADE UP OF ATOMS - IT IS AN INCREDIBLE AND DYNAMIC FLUID!
Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass - cats, trees, helium (it fills up balloons!), rocks, chairs, toast, etc.
All matter is made up of atoms.
Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass - cats, trees, helium (it fills up balloons!), rocks, chairs, toast, etc.
All matter is made up of atoms.
Atoms are the smallest building blocks of matter. Atoms come in different sizes and are defined by their size and behavior. Elements are specific atoms defined by size. Elements have names that are represented by an atomic symbol. These are organized by size and function and shown on the Periodic Table. Example: Oxygen is an element. Its atomic symbol is “O” Example: Carbon is an element. Its atomic symbol is “C” |

Elements can be combined to make molecules - when a molecule is described, it is done using the atomic symbol and numbers to tell how many of each element make up the molecule.
Ex. Oxygen in the air is made up of two atoms of oxygen = O2
Ex. Carbon Dioxide is made up of one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms: CO2
