Update With Date of Storm Naming
If a Named Storm is approaching the North Carolina Coast during the Weather Unit - we will work through the material on this "Hurricane Central" page. If a named storm does not approach, hurricanes will be covered with all other severe weather.
Hurricane _________________ is predicted to make land fall on or near the North Carolina coast as soon as ______________________________. Due to the dynamic nature of hurricanes, relevance to our course content, and relevance to your life, we will be following Hurricane ________________ this week, which will interrupt our previously planned course content.

Damaging Forces of Hurricanes
There are a number of reasons Hurricanes are considered dangerous storms. Below you will find videos that explain the risks and dangers associated with various aspects of a hurricane. Which ones do you think are most likely to affect us in Clayton?
Storm Categories
Tropical Depressions and Tropical Storms are essentially ill-formed hurricanes. They may develop into a hurricane, or a hurricane may be down graded to a tropical storm or depression as it weakens.
They are not included on the Saffir-Simpson scale, shown below, but are determined by wind speed.
Tropical Depression: thunder storms around low pressure area with cyclone like circulation - less than 39 mph sustained winds
Tropical Storm: Cyclone circulation is more organized - sustained winds 39 - 73 mph

Naming Storms
Tropical storms are named each year following a predetermined list of alphabetical names that is rotated on a six year basis. When a storm makes land fall and causes extensive damage, the name is retired and a new name will be added to the list, to take its place.
