Hurricane and Pressure Practice
To help you prepare for your quiz - pick TWO of the activities below.
Option 1: Density and Atmosphere Composition
Create a visual that shows you why you breath harder when hiking in the mountains than at sea level.
In this activity we will only focus on Oxygen and Nitrogen (ignoring the other gases in the atmosphere to keep it simple)
Step 1: Draw a line that divides a piece of note book paper into two halves.
Label 1 half: Sea Level
Label the other half: Mountain Top
Sea Level:
Mountain Top
Which atmosphere would provide you with more oxygen each time you took a breath...why?

Sea Level:
- Representing Nitrogen (rounded to 80%) Paste 80 paper squares of 1 color (or draw 80 circles of one color) evenly spread out within the half of the page
- Representing Oxygen (rounded to 20%) Paste 20 paper squares of a second color (or draw 20circles of a second color) evenly spread out within that half of the page
Mountain Top
- Representing Nitrogen (rounded to 80%) Paste 8 paper squares of 1 color (or draw 8 circles of one color) evenly spread out within the half of the page
- Representing Oxygen (rounded to 20%) Paste 2 paper squares of a second color (or draw 2 circles of a second color) evenly spread out within that half of the page
Which atmosphere would provide you with more oxygen each time you took a breath...why?
Option 2: Factors that Affect Hurricanes
Use your artistic skills to help you remember what conditions will weaken or strengthen a hurricane.
Divide a piece of paper into half and you will draw a picture on each half.
1st Half: Label it "Super Hurricane"
Draw a picture of a strong looking storm (give it a face, muscles, etc) then add to your illustration; adding parts that represent the four factors that will make a hurricane stronger. Label each factor.
2nd Half: Label it "Weak Hurricane"
Draw a picture of a sickly/pitiful looking storm (give it a face, sad expression, etc) then add to your illustration; adding parts that represent the four factors that will weaken a hurricane. Label each factor.

Option 3: Parts of a Hurricane/Historical Hurricanes
Write a story that takes me through a hurricane. Select one of the historical hurricanes from our class website: The Storm of 1900 (Galveston), Katrina (New Orleans), or Matthew(North Carolina or Haiti)
Your story must assume you took a direct hit from the storm and describe your experience including the following information.
Your story must assume you took a direct hit from the storm and describe your experience including the following information.
- When/How did you learn about the storm coming?
- Why didn't you evacuate?
- Describe going through each part of the hurricane by describing what might have been experienced as the rain bands, eye wall, and eye passed over you
- Include the terms "rain bands", "eye wall", and "eye"
- Describe wind speed that would have been appropriate for the part of the storm you experienced and the storm itself (do not tell me that the winds were 200 mph when Matthew hit, they were not)
- Describe the amount of rain that fell and the storm surge you experienced (if you can find it)
- Describe how the destruction occurred and what the aftermath was like of your storm
- Your final thoughts as a survivor of the storm
